Wrong sizes are the most expensive mistake in team uniform orders. Not because a single jersey costs much, but because a mid-season reorder costs time, shipping and sometimes a player sitting out while the replacement arrives.
The problem is not that coaches and parents cannot read a chart. It is that youth, adult and women’s cuts use different patterns, and a “Medium” means something different in each. This guide decodes all three and shows how to measure a whole roster without guesswork.
Measurements below are typical industry ranges. Always use the exact size chart for the specific garment you order.
Why Three Different Cuts Exist
| Cut | Pattern Built Around | Key Differences |
| Youth | Growing children’s proportions | Shorter body, narrower shoulders, sized by age ranges |
| Adult (unisex/men’s) | Adult male proportions | Straight body, broader shoulders, longer torso |
| Women’s | Adult female proportions | Narrower shoulders, shaped waist, room through the bust and hips, shorter sleeves |
Adult sizing is often called “unisex,” but most unisex patterns are built on men’s proportions. That is why many female athletes find unisex jerseys boxy in the body and wide in the shoulders.
How to Measure for a Jersey
You need a soft tape measure and two minutes per player.
- Chest: measure around the fullest part of the chest, under the arms, with the tape level.
- Waist: measure around the natural waist, usually just above the belly button.
- Hips (for shorts and women’s cuts): measure around the fullest part of the hips.
- Height: useful for youth sizing and for jersey length.
Tip: measure over a light t-shirt, not a hoodie. Keep the tape snug but not tight.
Youth Size Chart (Typical Ranges)
| Youth Size | Approx. Age | Chest (inches) | Waist (inches) | Height (inches) |
| YXS | 4 to 5 | 22 to 24 | 20 to 21 | 40 to 44 |
| YS | 6 to 8 | 25 to 27 | 21 to 22 | 45 to 50 |
| YM | 10 to 12 | 28 to 30 | 23 to 24 | 51 to 56 |
| YL | 14 to 16 | 31 to 33 | 25 to 26 | 57 to 61 |
| YXL | 18 to 20 | 34 to 36 | 27 to 28 | 62 to 65 |
When Youth Players Should Move to Adult Sizes
A YXL and an Adult Small are close in chest size, but the adult cut has a longer body and wider shoulders. Move a player to adult sizing when:
- Chest measures over 35 to 36 inches
- Height is over about 5 feet 5 inches
- Shoulders feel tight in YXL
Coaches ordering for younger teams can find the full sizing and roster process in our youth basketball team uniforms ordering guide.
Adult (Unisex) Size Chart (Typical Ranges)
| Adult Size | Chest (inches) | Waist (inches) |
| XS | 32 to 34 | 26 to 28 |
| S | 35 to 37 | 28 to 30 |
| M | 38 to 40 | 31 to 33 |
| L | 41 to 44 | 34 to 36 |
| XL | 45 to 48 | 37 to 40 |
| 2XL | 49 to 52 | 41 to 44 |
| 3XL | 53 to 56 | 45 to 48 |
| 4XL | 57 to 60 | 49 to 52 |
Women’s Size Chart (Typical Ranges)
| Women’s Size | Bust (inches) | Waist (inches) | Hips (inches) |
| XS | 31 to 32 | 24 to 25 | 34 to 35 |
| S | 33 to 34 | 26 to 27 | 36 to 37 |
| M | 35 to 36 | 28 to 29 | 38 to 39 |
| L | 37 to 39 | 30 to 32 | 40 to 42 |
| XL | 40 to 42 | 33 to 35 | 43 to 45 |
| 2XL | 43 to 45 | 36 to 38 | 46 to 48 |
Converting Women’s to Unisex
Women ordering unisex jerseys usually go down one size from their women’s size for a similar chest fit, but the jersey will still be looser at the waist and wider at the shoulders. For performance sports, a true women’s cut fits better.
Youth vs Adult vs Women’s: Same Label, Different Fit
| Label | Youth Chest | Adult Chest | Women’s Bust |
| Small | 25 to 27 | 35 to 37 | 33 to 34 |
| Medium | 28 to 30 | 38 to 40 | 35 to 36 |
| Large | 31 to 33 | 41 to 44 | 37 to 39 |
| XL | 34 to 36 | 45 to 48 | 40 to 42 |
That table explains most sizing mistakes. A parent who orders “Medium” without the youth or adult prefix can end up with a jersey 10 inches too wide.

Fit by Sport: How Tight Should a Jersey Be?
Every sport has its own ideal fit, and that changes which size to pick.
| Sport | Ideal Fit | Sizing Advice |
| Basketball | Relaxed through the body, open armholes | True to size; size up for a longer, looser look |
| Football | Tight over pads | Size to fit over shoulder pads; see pad manufacturer guidance |
| Flag football | Close, tuck-friendly | True to size; avoid oversized fits that cover flags |
| Soccer | Athletic, not tight | True to size |
| Volleyball | Fitted (women’s) or athletic | True to size; fitted cuts run snug |
| Baseball | Classic, room to throw | True to size; size up if between sizes |
Sport-Specific Notes
- Football: jerseys must fully cover shoulder pads and reach the top of the pants. Our custom football uniforms guide covers pad-compatible fits.
- Flag football: loose jerseys that cover the flag belt cause penalties. Our flag football jerseys vs tackle uniforms guide explains why tuck-friendly cuts matter.
- Basketball: reversible jerseys fit slightly snugger because of the double layer. Our reversible vs single-sided basketball uniforms comparison covers the difference.
Number Size and Jersey Size
League rules set minimum number heights, and those do not shrink for small jerseys. A 6-inch back number takes up a big share of a Youth Small. Plan names and sponsor logos around that. Our baseball uniform numbers and lettering guide includes a number-to-jersey size table.
Team Sizing Workflow That Prevents Reorders
- Send a sizing form with youth, adult and women’s options listed separately.
- Require the prefix. “YM” or “AM” or “WM,” never just “M.”
- Offer a fit kit if possible: sample jerseys players can try on at practice.
- Size for the season end for growing youth players.
- Order 1 to 2 spares in the most common sizes.
- Confirm totals against the roster before approving the order.
Common Sizing Mistakes
- Ordering unisex for a women’s team without offering a women’s cut
- Sizing youth players for today, not for March
- Mixing size charts from different garments on the same order
- Forgetting that shorts may need a different size than the jersey

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between youth and adult jersey sizes?
Youth jerseys have a shorter body, narrower shoulders and smaller chest ranges. An Adult Small is roughly 8 to 10 inches wider in the chest than a Youth Small.
Should women order women’s or unisex jerseys?
For performance sports, a women’s cut usually fits better through the shoulders and waist. If ordering unisex, most women go down one size.
When should a youth player switch to adult sizes?
Usually when chest size passes 35 to 36 inches, height passes about 5 feet 5 inches, or YXL feels tight in the shoulders.
Do jersey sizes run the same across sports?
No. Each sport uses different fits, from tight football jerseys to relaxed basketball cuts. Always check the specific garment’s size chart.
The Bottom Line on Jersey Sizing
Every size label needs its prefix: youth, adult or women’s. Measure chest, waist and height, size growing players for the end of the season, and use the chart for the exact garment you are ordering. Do that, and your next uniform delivery fits every player on the first try.
