Supplier names change every season. The five business models behind them do not. Every custom jersey company falls into one of five archetypes, and each archetype has predictable minimums, pricing, turnaround and failure modes. Learning the archetypes is more useful than memorising a vendor list, because it tells you what a quote will look like before you request it. This guide compares all five and gives a weighted scoring framework you can apply to any supplier you are considering.
The Five Supplier Archetypes
1. Domestic No-Minimum Sublimation Shops
Built on dye sublimation, which carries no per-order setup cost. Produces from one unit upward at consistent per-unit pricing, proofs in the customer’s timezone, and stores art files for reorders. Typical range $18 to $40 per jersey with 8 to 16 business days from artwork to delivery. Weakest on very large orders, where dedicated factories undercut them.
2. Domestic Bulk-Only Manufacturers
Minimums of 12 to 24 units, sometimes higher. Strong per-unit pricing at roster scale and above, full cut-and-sew capability, and good specification control. Poor fit for small squads, staff apparel or mid-season replacements, because a single unit either cannot be ordered or is priced punitively.
3. Overseas Direct Factories
Lowest unit price by a wide margin, minimums usually 50 to 200 units. Landed cost includes freight, duty on synthetic knit apparel and brokerage, which narrows the gap considerably below about 200 units. Lead times of 5 to 11 weeks including customs, and revision cycles measured in days. Best for planned, league-scale buying with a long runway.
4. Print-on-Demand Marketplaces
No minimum and fast fulfilment, but decoration applied to blank stock rather than cut-and-sew production. Typically vinyl, transfer or direct-to-film graphics on a stock garment. Excellent for supporter merchandise and one-off gifts. Not built for a competitive season, because surface graphics lift under team laundering.
5. Local Screen-Print and Embroidery Shops
Strong on caps, polos, jackets and cotton merchandise. Setup costs create effective minimums of 12 to 24 units, and screen fees run $18 to $30 per colour with embroidery digitizing at $40 to $95. Excellent for staff and travel apparel, generally the wrong tool for a full-colour sublimated game jersey.
Archetype Comparison Matrix
| Attribute | No-Minimum Sublimation | Bulk Domestic | Overseas Factory | Print-on-Demand | Local Screen Print |
| Minimum order | 1 | 12 to 24 | 50 to 200 | 1 | 12 to 24 effective |
| Per jersey, 15 units | $19 to $34 | $20 to $32 | Not available | $28 to $45 | $26 to $42 |
| Per jersey, 200 units | $16 to $26 | $15 to $24 | $11 to $18 plus landed costs | $26 to $42 | $18 to $30 |
| Artwork to delivery | 8 to 16 business days | 10 to 20 business days | 5 to 11 weeks | 5 to 12 business days | 7 to 15 business days |
| Setup fees | None | Sometimes | Sample and tooling | None | Per colour and per logo |
| Cut-and-sew construction | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Mid-season reorder of 3 | Routine | Often blocked | Impractical | Routine | Setup fees repeat |
| Graphic lifespan | Life of the garment | Life of the garment | Life of the garment | 25 to 45 washes | 40 to 80 washes |
Weighted Scoring Framework
Score any supplier out of 5 on each criterion, multiply by the weight, and total. The weights below suit a typical school or club team; adjust them if your situation differs.
| Criterion | Weight | What a 5 Looks Like |
| Delivery before your fixture date | 25 percent | Dated schedule provided in writing before payment |
| Landed cost per jersey | 20 percent | All-in figure including freight and any duty |
| Garment specification | 20 percent | GSM, composition and knit stated in writing |
| Reorder capability | 15 percent | Art file stored, single units accepted, colour holds |
| Artwork support | 10 percent | Free unlimited mockups before payment |
| Remedy if something is wrong | 10 percent | Published defect policy with a clear window |
Delivery and specification carry half the weight between them because they are the two failures you cannot fix mid-season. Our own specification detail sits on the fabric types and printing methods pages, timings on shipping and delivery, and defect terms in our return and refund policy.
Matching Archetype to Buyer
| Buyer | Best Archetype | Why |
| Youth rec team, 10 to 14 players | No-minimum sublimation | Roster is below most minimums, spares needed later |
| High school programme, 40 to 60 units | No-minimum or bulk domestic | Volume pricing without losing reorder ability |
| Club with several age groups, 150+ units | Bulk domestic | Dye lot consistency across teams at good pricing |
| League-wide supply, 400+ units, 6-month runway | Overseas factory | Landed cost advantage finally holds at this scale |
| 3v3 squad or coaching staff | No-minimum sublimation | Only archetype that prices small orders sensibly |
| Supporter merchandise and fan tees | Print-on-demand | Cotton and dark garments, no season-long duty cycle |
| Staff polos, caps and jackets | Local screen print or embroidery | Stitched decoration on items seen off the field |

Red Flags in Any Quote
- No GSM figure. A quote without fabric weight cannot be compared with any other quote.
- “No minimum” with tiered single-unit pricing. Ask for the price at quantity 1 and quantity 10 in writing.
- Mockup charged before payment. Free proofing is standard across serious suppliers.
- Turnaround quoted without separating production from transit. “10 days” means different things in each.
- No published defect or remedy policy. Custom garments are non-returnable by default, so the defect terms are the only protection you have.
- Art files not stored for reorder. Guarantees a colour mismatch on your next order.
- Stock photography only, no delivered work shown. Ask to see finished garments made for real teams.
Nine Questions to Ask Before You Commit
- What is the GSM, composition and knit structure of the jersey fabric?
- What is the price at quantity 1 and at quantity 10?
- Are there setup, screen, digitizing or artwork fees at any quantity?
- How many days is production, and how many days is transit, separately?
- Is the mockup free, and how many revisions are included?
- Do you store my art file, and what does a reorder of three units cost and take?
- Where are the garments cut, sewn and printed?
- What is your remedy if the order arrives defective or incorrect, and within what window?
- Can you provide a dated production and delivery schedule before I pay?
Three-Season Cost Across Archetypes
| Line, 18-Player Roster | No-Minimum Sublimation | Print-on-Demand | Local Screen Print |
| Season 1 initial order | $24 x 18 = $432 | $34 x 18 = $612 | $30 x 18 = $540 |
| Setup and digitizing fees | $0 | $0 | $96 |
| Graphic failure replacements, seasons 2 to 3 | $0 | $204, 6 units | $90, 3 units |
| Mid-season additions, 4 units | $96 | $136 | $120 plus repeat setup |
| Three-season total | $528 | $952 | $846 |
| Cost per player per season | $9.78 | $17.63 | $15.67 |
The gap is driven almost entirely by graphic failure and repeat setup fees rather than by the headline unit price. That is the pattern to watch for in any comparison you run yourself.
Questions Buyers Ask About Choosing a Supplier
Is the cheapest quote ever the right one?
Only when the specification matches. A cheaper jersey at 130 GSM against a 155 GSM comparison is not a cheaper jersey, it is a different product.
Should I use one supplier for everything?
Usually two. Sublimation for game kit, stitched decoration for caps, polos and jackets. Very few suppliers are genuinely strong at both.
How do I test a supplier before committing a full roster?
Order one jersey in the exact final specification. It is the cheapest insurance in the category, and only archetypes with no minimum make it possible. Ordering detail sits on our FAQ page.
What matters most for a team ordering annually?
Reorder capability. A supplier who stores your file and accepts single units removes the colour-mismatch problem entirely, which is how our repeat order process is built.
Choosing on Structure, Not on Marketing
Identify the archetype first, then score the supplier against your fixture date, landed cost, specification and reorder needs. Most school and club teams are best served by domestic no-minimum sublimation, most league-scale planned buying by bulk or overseas production, and all stitched off-field apparel by an embroidery specialist. Background on how we produce sits on our about page, current specifications in our shop, and volume quotes through our bulk orders desk. Send us the nine questions above through the contact page and we will answer every one in writing before you order anything.
